Americans who declare bankruptcy eventually recover, financially, but it takes a long time, according to a study released last month by The Ohio State University. The study, in which 7,661 respondents participated, found that typically it takes 10 to 20 years or more for those who file bankruptcy to reach the same financial status as their peers - and those who have declared bankruptcy have done so at a surprisingly young age.

Rising gas prices are forcing the Ohio General Assembly to consider an energy option that will face contention from environmental advocates: drilling for oil and natural gas in Ohio's state parks. Ohio Supreme Court justices reasoned a Cuyahoga County appellate court was wrong in its view that a mortgage brokerage's pending action seeking declaratory and injunctive relief was an adequate remedy in the ordinary course of law. Mayfield Heights-based Gilmour Realty Inc. appealed the 8th District Court of Appeals' ruling dismissing the company's mandamus action against Mayfield Heights and its planning commission to compel the start of appropriation proceedings based on an alleged regulatory taking, according to background included in the decision.

CINCINNATI (AP) - With her household budget tightening, Michelle Fox treats couponing like getting a part-time job to help make ends meet. In her case, it's a job that pays about $20 an hour. "Every little bit helps. It's something I do for my family," said the Pueblo, Colo. , resident, who helps offset rising costs for her five-person household by spending a few hours each week scouring the Sunday newspapers and Internet sites for opportunities to save quarters and dollars per item.

WASHINGTON - Orders to U. S. factories turned in the weakest performance in three months in May, reflecting slumping demand for autos, heavy machinery and steel. The Commerce Department reported Wednesday that factory orders rose by 0. 6 percent in May, less than half the gains turned in during April and March. RALEIGH, N. C. - North Carolina Gov. Mike Easley called on state lawmakers Tuesday to make up for the federal government's inaction by approving a measure to help some struggling homeowners by giving them more latitude to repay their debt. "We've all been looking to the federal government to step in and do something about all of these foreclosures, and they've done nothing," Easley said.
